Huntsville DVD Enthusiasts Group - New Group, New Page
I wish more titles would come out on DVD. The games today are getting too big (too many CD's and too much hard drive real-estate taken up.) The benefits of DVD are enormous and the drives are getting more and more sofisticated while the prices are dropping so why isn't this technology being fully embraced?

Problem with 5108 IDE Controller
(just as a note, that I am open to buying a comparable piece of dvd-recordable drive in the < $800 range - dvd-ram, dvd-r, dvd+rw, dvd-rw, others?) Well, right now DVD-RAM is the only one out there. DVD-R is grossly out of the consumer price range ($15K) and doesn't show any sign of dropping anytime soon.

How many DVD drives can I get in a computer?
I can't see HD-DVD surviving with all these announcements on the bigger companies dropping HD-DVD for Blu-Ray only. Blu-Ray burners and player drives for the PC are out and about everywhere from many different brand names. Not seen any HD-DVD drives for the PC in this country from any PC supplier.

HD-DVD likely to be Xbox2 format
The software that I use with my CD-burner is CQuadrat's WinOnCD which includes PacketCD, a programme which allows a CD-R disk to be used like a hard disk - drag and drop files etc. I found that when I right clicked on the DVD drive icon in Windows explorer and selected 'properties' the properties 'device' tab

DVD, not the saviour of video games! (movies yes, videogames no)
I got an LG Dual HD format drive for my computer that I can watch Blu-Ray if I want to. Relaly I just want to rip them and then they can go screw themselves. this isn't exactly current news: http://akgeeks.net/BDDVDvsHDDVD But interesting that Wal-Mart is the first to drop HD-DVD. Sucks balls.

STRANGE INVADERS
It won't be long before 8x dvd-r burners come out. By the time the a05 comes out there maybe some news on 8x dvd-r burners. The speed of which the speed of CD & DVD drives increased should be an indication as to how fast the speed of DVD burners will increase. I can remember getting my first 4x IDE CD-Rom drive for

CDROM Drives, DVD, Recorders, Rewritables
As long as your CDROM speed is 8x or greater (the DVD is 12x), you are just fine. If you are NOT going to watch movies... I personally would NOT go for it. There is almost NO software on the market for DVD drives. This will change, but who knows when. In the mean time... DVD prices will drop, the drives will get

RIP HD-DVD -Toshiba Officially Drops HD DVD
You would then have direct access to any track on the hard drive. I think you would be able to fit all of it (1300 CD's?) on as little as a 100GB hard drive. The desktop option would provide you with more capability for quality sound card output like you require. There are numerous jukebox type applications out

Also,
if you happen to have any other standalone DVD players in the house, or any other computers with DVD drives (even if they are just DVD-ROM drives and not writers) test all I removed the 60mm CPU fan, removed all the dust, peeled off the label on the fixed side, and gave the bearing a drop of light oil.

Microsoft talked toshiba out of going to the blu ray camp in 2005 , mainly because MS was poised to release their HD-DVD drive for their 360 and didnt want shorten their lives -- as DVD playback on the PS2 and XB did. Instead, I'm now in the market for a good BluRay standalone player after the prices drop a bit.

Which DVD drive to buy?
At that speed a DVD with mpeg decoder card is recommended. With processor prices forever dropping should I buy a drive and replace the 300a celeron with a Pentium II 400? Any hope of overclocking that 300A to 450MHz by going from a 66MHz to 100MHz FSB? That might let you do software decoding on DVDs.

RIP HD-DVD -Toshiba Officially Drops HD DVD
DVD players are dropping pretty fast in price. Yeah, but thereīsa limit ----- and itīs too high. Have you seen a $150 DVD player yet? Wonīt happen. Not in this century (which ends Dec 31, 2000 BTW). You have to make a distinction between a dvd drive and dvd (movie) player. A dvd player is much more expensive since

Are DVD drives ever going to drop in price?!!!
Looking forward to bitching about Profiles, failed Beta Ray drives, DRM and over priced movies. Competition is..was a good thing..people need to get that in their thick skulls. My PS3 still sits and does nothing most of the time so what a glorious win.. how many times you gonna post this asshole?

Dell, IBM, Sony, ?
Dropping their price would be a very strong move. Now for about the price of a 360, you could get a PS3 that plays most of the same games, AND plays blu-ray movies. Even if Microsoft countered with their own price drop, and came out with a blu-ray add-on drive to replace the HD-DVD add-on, this combination would

Slot-loading is a wonderful way of fingering and scratching up a DVD, or dropping it on the floor. Can help sell a lot of those fancy CD/DVD repair kits... Uhhh, no. The whole point of slot loading is that as the disc enters the drive it is gripped by the edges until the centre spindle is clamped.

Toshiba to drop HD-DVD - almost official
If you put a DVD drive in without the RAM drivers it will only function as as a CD drive. Also if you prefer to use Windows media player 9 as I do you will need to install the Codecs also. (This is so you don't have to use Cyberlink or Power DVD) Also note that if you have Direct CD eg.Drag & Drop installed you
